Facts & Fiction
While many people have heard of or read about Feng Shui, few understand
what good classical Feng Shui really is and what it can do for them.
This ancient Chinese practice has been around for
thousands of years, and in the past 20 years or so, has gained popularity
worldwide. However, this popularity has not always been for the
best as for every “good” Feng Shui consultant, book,
or theory that are beneficial to people, there have also sprouted
many trendy, superficial, “quick fix” ideas and experts
which play more into superstition and incorrect applications of
Feng Shui. This “pop culture”-type of Feng Shui is seen
as everything from interior decorating and furniture placement/rearrangement
to wearing the right jewelry and colors. Feng Shui has far more
to offer than just telling you where to put your sofa and coffee
table in the living room. While these components are definitely
parts of the overall practice of Feng Shui, that is really all that
they are—only parts. While many of these components taken
by themselves are still good ideas, understanding Feng Shui
as a whole, and applying its deeper principles and meanings, is
far more valuable.
The application of Classical Feng Shui is practical. As
with most things in life, logical, and well-planned solutions are
usually better than “band-aids” that may help temporarily
but will not hold up in the long run. If Feng Shui is done
the right way it can bring great long-term satisfaction to one’s
life in many different ways, be it by achieving more at
work or school, communicating more effectively with our spouses
or children, or simply feeling more peaceful and less stressed.
When there is harmony in our personal
lives as well as at home
and at work,
good things—and a good future—naturally come next.
Therefore, a good thing to keep in
mind about Feng Shui is to remember what it is NOT:
- It is not a religion.
- It is not a cult.
- It is not something that “kooky”
or “weird” people do.
- It is not a one-size-fits-all cure-all.
- It should not be used as a substitute for
(but rather as an addition to) medical attention in cases of serious
health problems.
Feng Shui IS:
- For everyone.
- A time-honored practice that has been around
for centuries
- Something that works FOR you rather then
AGAINST you.
- A practice that employs a set of techniques
that can be used in any culture and alongside any belief system.
- For anyone who wants to take action to improve
their lives
A good comparison and example of something else that once
seemed “mysterious” or beyond the grasp of the average
person is yoga. 10 or 20 years ago, yoga was viewed by many people
as an obscure thing practiced by “hippies” or people
on the fringe. Today, yoga has been embraced by mainstream society
and has been incorporated into millions of people’s everyday
lives. Now, it is my aim to help people see that Feng Shui also
is not something strange nor a passing fad (quite the opposite actually!)
but rather something very real and normal that anyone can apply
to their everyday lives in order to get good results.
